If it had been in the Premier League, Gary Lineker and co would have been swooning over it on Match of the Day.

However, it fell to Sutton United boss Paul Doswell to heap the praise on Craig McAllister after his wonder goal in the 3-0 win over Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday.

Having opened the scoring in conventional fashion, McAllister somehow back-heeled Craig Dundas’ cross over his own head and past the hapless Havant keeper.

It also led Doswell to draw comparisons between McAllister and a Sutton United great from ages past.

Moreover, coming just before half-time it gave United some breathing space that would be extended in the second half thanks to Dundas’ fifth goal of the season.

Doswell said: “It was some goal, and I am really pleased that we’re taking chances in the six yard box now, whereas before we were maybe letting them slip away.

“But Craig’s scored a fantastic goal. He back-heeled the ball over his own head. It was a brilliant piece of centre forward play and I would watch the highlights if you can.”

He added: “In terms of the technique, it was excellent, and talking to some United fans it’s what Micky Joyce used to do in this heyday.”

Killer third goal: Craig Dundas slides in to make it 3-0 to Sutton United

That killer third goal was also a moment to celebrate for the boss, as United have lost valuable points this season when nervously defending slender leads at the death.

He said: “We have struggled to put teams to bed at home.

“While we played well on Saturday, we have played better this year and probably drawn or lost, but this game is so simple, it’s all about putting the ball in that eight-yard space between the posts.

“It is hard sometimes, because could you say we’d played poorly on Saturday if it had finished 0-0, no, but we’re getting accolades because of the scoreline.

“But I would say we played just as well against Hayes & Yeading the weekend before but did not score from any of our 20 or so chances, and we lost 1-0.”

United head to Concord Rangers this weekend in the FA Trophy, and Doswell is sweating on the fitness of Stuart Fleetwood (rib), while Dan Fitchett and Bedsente Gomis should be fit enough to be on the bench.

Tommy Wright is cup-tied, while Tom Bolarinwa and Dan Spence are unlikely to feature.
