Doswell Sutton United boss Paul Doswell admitted that Wednesday night’s draw at Kingstonian was a “hard watch”.

Ryan Moss’ early striker was cancelled out by Bradley Hudson-Odoi’s penalty in injury time.

United rarely threatened the Ks’ goal, while the hosts failed to make the most of a United defence all at sea in the first half.

Doswell pointed to the pitch as key to the below-par performance, although there were other mitigating circumstances.

He said: “In the first half we tried a different system of 3-5-2. We wanted to look at the system and then coach out the bad bits.

“During the season there might be times when perhaps we’ve lost three games on the trot, and we feel in the fourth game that we might want to play five at the back and just keep it tight.

“On the flip side, if you’re 1-0 down, you can go three at the back and have a very attacking formation.”

He added: “We also needed to get some minutes into Louis John and Simon Downer.

FOOTBALL: Life's a pitch for Williams and Kingstonian

“So there are objectives that were met, but we would have liked to have seen better in the first half.

“We took the fixture on the basis that normally the pitch is excellent, but it was almost unplayable in football terms because of the length of the grass.

“It was a sterile game and hard to watch – but trying to pass a football on this pitch was tough, it was falling five yards short and it made players look like bad players.

“We also had a double training session on Tuesday in the heat, we ran the legs off them – so we weren’t expecting great things.”
