Sutton United’s manager has “moved on” after the BBC said it would air the FA cup fourth round match between Leeds United and AFC Wimbledon or the U’s.

U’s manager, Paul Doswell, was left frustrated after the BBC decided not to televise the 0-0 draw against AFC Wimbledon at Gander Green Lane on Saturday, January 7.

He said TV money from Saturday’s game would have gone towards improving the dressing rooms of the under-8s through to the 18-year-old side.

Mr Doswell has since said the club has been ‘placated’ after the BBC said it would air the FA cup fourth round match against Leeds United, which either AFC Wimbledon or Sutton United will face-off against.

Speaking to the Sutton Guardian he said: “We’ve moved on and, well, the fourth-round tie has placated us somewhat. The carrot is the game against Leeds that will be shown on TV. It’s a huge game for whoever goes through.

“I think if you see it from their (the BBC’s) side of things, Lincoln and Ipswich have a much bigger fan base and they would have been looking at the best way to appeal to as many people as possible. Sutton and Wimbledon is a big game for us, but we don’t have the same number of fans as those two teams.

“The worst one was Manchester City and West Ham, which you can see at any time. This was a chance to get non-league clubs on TV. If we were going to be on, it should have been last week because we were only going to be up against it with Liverpool and Plymouth.”

Should the U’s win their replay against AFC Wimbledon at the Kingsmeadow Stadium on Tuesday they will face Leeds United at Gander Green Lane between January 27 and January 30.

It would be the second time in the club’s history that they will have reached the fourth round of the FA cup.

Mr Doswell said: “Wimbledon will be the favourites on Tuesday. You’d have to be mad to put more than £2 on us to win. We need to be at our best and Wimbledon need to have an off day.

“We have another game on Saturday and we won’t talk about Wimbledon until that is done. They aren’t going to get much different from what they got at the first game. It will be all about the players on the day, not about me or (AFC Wimbledon manager) Neal.”

AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United will play the FA cup third round replay match at 7.45pm on Tuesday, January 17.
