Sutton United manager Paul Doswell says several key players are still some way off returning from injury.

The U's sit top of the Vanarama National League after a 1-0 win away to Bromley on Monday, securing 15 points out of a possible 21 in their first seven games.

Despite having to play two games in three days over the bank holiday weekend with crucial members of his squad nursing knocks, United's latest victory proved the perfect response to last Saturday's 3-1 home defeat to Maidstone United.

Doswell offered an update on those players who have been unavailable for selection recently.

He said: "Ross [Lafayette] is having a scan today [Thursday], and I’m hopeful it’ll show him as being okay and in the clear. So that’ll bring him back in a week or two.

"Adam Coombes has started some very light jogging, so he’s probably three weeks away.

"Dean Beckwith has started running, so he’ll probably be another week or two away.

Doswell said he doesn't know how long Jamie Collins could continue to remain in the starting 11 with his fractured wrist, though Simon Downer is participating in light jogging and "could be two to three weeks away".

Injuries aside, the Sutton boss remains pleased with the start his side has made to the league campaign: "I think the players had an amazing August, really.

"To play seven games in the space of 23 days is an incredible feat for part-time players.

"I thought, again in temperatures reaching probably 30 degrees, we played a different style against Bromley.

"We played some excellent football in the first half and I think we deserved to be more than 1-0 up.

"That was always a worry - similar to Maidstone - that we might just run out of gas again. But we managed the game better today and I thought it was a well-deserved win."

Sutton United host Maidenhead United in the Vanarama National League this Saturday, September 2, at the Knights Community Stadium. Kick-off is 3pm.

With it being a weekend for international matches, supporters of Premiership, Championship and EFL teams can gain reduced entry to the Sutton game on production of their season ticket. More details at suttonunited.net
