League One Millwall have entered the race to sign Hampton & Richmond Borough’s highly-rated striker Ben Wright after Lions boss Kenny Jackett offered the youngster a one-match trial.

The 19-year-old has 12 goals to his name this season - despite starting the campaign as third choice front man at the Beveree - and has already attracted interest from Championship side Reading and League Two Brentford.

Wright starred for the Royals’ reserves in a 1-1 draw with Aldershot before Christmas and has been watched regularly by Millwall chief scout Stuart Murdoch in recent weeks.

Jackett, who will run the rule over Wright in a reserve match next week, has a history of plucking young players from non-League and is widely considered to be an excellent coach of young players.

But he insists a deal is far from being done pointing out he is not expecting him to set the world alight straight away.

“He is only a young kid from non-League coming to play a game for us,” he said.

“He has shown some good touch and awareness to play others in, but he is a player for the future rather than someone who is going to get us promotion.”
