Richard Jolly admits he was happy to walk away from Carshalton Athletic after the striker quit the Colston Avenue club this week.

Jolly elected to move on after having discussions with new boss Mark Butler.

And the forward, who claimed the Ryman Golden Boot two years ago with 31 league goals and struck another 19 this time around, reckons it was the right move for all parties.

Jolly said: “The club told me that they were not likely to take up my option for next season for financial reasons so I thought it was in my best interests to move on.

“It was all pretty amicable, although the fact it has not been mentioned anywhere shows how much they valued me I suppose.

“To be honest, I did not want to stick around for another rebuilding programme and that is what looks like is going to happen.

“The last season was not enjoyable at all with managers coming and going, and the undercurrent between the fans and the people running the club made it a difficult environment to be happy in.

“To think that we were a kick away from playing at a higher level the season before is very, very disappointing and that is what I will take with me.”

Jolly is hoping to stay at the Ryman Premier level, and is expecting to join another club within the next week.

And the former AFC Wimbledon man feels Butler has a tough job on his hands with the Robins.

Jolly added: “I think it is a good appointment and everybody knew it was going to happen.

“I really hope the club does well next season but I think they will struggle.

“I know there are more players likely to leave and with a budget cut it will be difficult for them.

“I wish them all the best and look forward to going back there in the future.”
