London Scottish head coach Simon Amor admits the form of half-backs Lee Cholewa and Owain Walbyoff has been the biggest plus in his side’s resurgence.

The Exiles made it four wins in a row with a gritty 17-9 triumph at Stourbridge on Saturday, thanks to first-half tries from hooker Tom Standfield and prop Alex Clarke.

Cholewa and Walbyoff have been pivotal in the absence of Amor and fly-half James Brown, who are one of a number of players struggling with injury this term.

And the Athletic Ground chief believes it a reflection of the strength in his squad that they have been able to turn their campaign around.

“I’m absolutely chuffed for them. They have both taken their chance. When you have strength in depth players know that is what they have to do,” he said.

“Owain missed a lot of last season with injury, but he has slowly got his fitness back. He is a top quality player.

“We’ve cut individual errors and simplified our gameplan in recent weeks and that is working at the moment, which has given us a platform to work from.

“Owain suits those tactics as he plays a very different style to most scrum-halves. He is aggressive, direct and in your face.

”We hope to play some more attacking rugby in the coming weeks.”

Scottish’s back-to-basics approach has seen them rise to fifth in the National Division One table - seven points behind leaders Barking.

Four successive wins have erased the memory of the three straight defeats that opened the campaign, but Amor is refusing to get carried away.

“Results elsewhere show we cannot look too far ahead of ourselves. Who would have thought leaders Blackheath would lose at home to a mid-table team?,” he added.

“It is a very competitive league. We are fully focused on the next game and nothing else.

“You cannot afford to switch off. If you do for a short period in any game, then you get punished and that is the difference between winning and losing the close games.”

Scottish’s next three games: Oct 23 Sedgley Park (h), 30 Cinderford (a), Nov 6 Cambridge (h).
