Sutton United striker Craig Watkins would rather win the Blue Square South title than land a glamour tie in the FA Cup.

The former Exeter City man scored the winner in Saturday's 1-0 win over Blue Square Premier Kettering Town side - a goal that is worth more than £100,000 to the club.

Sutton have collected £43,000 from their run to the second round and will collect another £72,000 from broadcasters ESPN when their clash with League One Notts County at Gander Green Lane is screened live on December 4.

Watkins was part of the Havant & Waterlooville squad - which also included Sutton team mates Tony Taggart and Kevin Scriven - that suffered a 5-2 fourth round defeat at Premier League giants Liverpool in 2008.

But the 13-goal front man, who wasn't in the matchday 16 for that match, insists he hasn't even thought about the Magpies clash because league points remain the priority.

"Just walking out on the pitch to warm up at Anfield and hear the fans singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was amazing, but I never actually played in the game," he said.

"You'd have to ask Kevin and Tony about that match, because I've only ever played in the first round before for Havant against Brentford.

"The boys haven't really thought or talked about Notts County and being on television and everything. I suppose it hasn't really sunk in yet.

"It will be on people's minds because people won't want to get injured, but the league is our bread and butter. I'd rather win the league than play a Premier League side in the third round of the cup."

Sutton, who travel to Dorchester Town on Saturday, crashed 1-0 against Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday night as they missed an opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Woking.

And Watkins, who credits a spell with Met Police last season for his spectacular form this term, believes United have already shown they have the ability to bounce back from defeat in style.

"The last time we lost a game was against Bromley and then we went 16-games unbeaten. We can do it again," he added.

"It is very important we react the right way on Saturday. Dorchester will be tough, but we have to keep in touch with the teams at the top."
