Sutton United boss Paul Doswell has insisted the club are not about to go full time, despite switching training to morning sessions.

The Gander Green Lane boss unveiled the move last night as part of plans to help United remain competitive in the Blue Square South and beyond.

Doswell, who watched an Anthony Riviere goal secure a 1-1 draw at Maidenhead United on Saturday, has been busy recruiting young players able to combine the switch to morning starts with part-time work.

While existing stars who can do the same will be retained as the club moves training times at Surrey Sports Park in line with other full-time non-League and Football League outfits.

Sutton chairman Bruce Elliott runs a tight financial ship and will not risk the future of the club to chase the dream of Blue Square Premier football.

It has forced Doswell to think laterally and the manager, who announced the plans at a meeting with fans last night, believes the move will make the club more competitive at no extra cost.

“With the players we’ve brought in to the club in recent weeks it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what we are trying to do,” he said.

“Training in the evening doesn’t really suit anyone because everyone is tired from a day at work. We will be fresher in the mornings and able to work properly.

“The players we will be keeping are able to commit to it and the players we’ve brought in are young and hungry to do the same. The coaching and management team are comfortable with it too.

“The coaching and management team we have here can improve the players we have. You see that in the likes of Harry Beautyman and Tommy Kavanagh.

“We cannot afford to throw money at it, so this is a way for us to stay competitive, without costing us. It is not a move to become a full time club.”

Doswell’s men are unbeaten in eight games and go to the manager’s former club Eastleigh on Saturday.
