Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's Andrew Penney has been selected to represent Oxford in the annual Varsity cross-country match on Wimbledon Common on December 1.

Penney, a 21-year-old freshman at Oxford, and the fastest  member of Hercules Wimbledon's silver medal-winning Surrey road relay championships team in September, clinched his place in the Oxford team for the historic match when he finished  fifth in a representative match against the Royal Air Force at Oxford.

He was the fourth university runner to finish in 36 minutes, eight seconds, just over a minute behind the winner in fifth place.

One place behind and also representing Oxford was his Hercules Wimbledon clubmate Dominic Kiralyfi in 37:02.

However, he just failed to make the first team match and will be in action in the second team contest in Cambridge on Saturday.

A third Hercules Wimbledon runner in action in the representative match was Kieran White who was the top finisher from the club as he led the RAF team home finishing third in 36:14.

Penney helped Oxford to a narrow team victory with an individual double in the Freshers' Varsity track and field meeting at Iffley Road track.

Penney won the 1,500m and 3,000m in 4:10.9 and 9:09.4 and was also third in the 800m in 2:02.4.

Another Hercules Wimbledon athlete in the match was Simon Lambracos who was third in the 100m for the Light Blues in 12.2.
