Croydon Harriers held their Olympic year Presentation Dinner at Trinity School in Croydon on Friday, with more than 130 athletes, families and friends in attendance.

The guests of honour were the deputy mayor of Croydon Tony Harris and his consort Valerie Harris, with club president Chris King in the chair.

The event was enhanced by the presence of two of the Harriers’ three Olympians, Lawrence Okoye and Martyn Rooney, the club’s three Olympic torch relay runners – Mike Fleet, Elliot Safo and Twinelle Hopeson – as well as Matthew Kiernan and his team of Olympic Stadium kit carriers and Olympic volunteers, Lorraine Gomes, Carol Munns and Caroline Powell.

The Harriers top award, the Jack Lisney Memorial Salver, for outstanding service to the club, went to retiring treasurer Claire Plackett, and the outstanding performance trophies were won by UK discus record holder Okoye and junior international sprinter Twinelle Hopeson.

Club chairman Colin Oxlade was awarded the Cambridge Shield as the major cross-country contributor, while Peter Chambers, a Trinity student and fast-emerging distance star on track, country and road, was one of the most prolific winners.

Special awards were made to vice president Mark Shearman, top athletics photographer in the UK, if not in the world, in his 50th year of action, and Matthew Kiernan in recognition of his work promoting the club at the Olympics and beyond.

Retiring road-running secretary Mike Caudwell also picked up a special award after some 50 years of dedicated service to the sport.
