As her summer season comes to an end, Katy-Ann McDonald is looking back on a momentous triple as well as looking ahead to a winter of domination.

Earlier this month, the 14-year-old ended the summer with first place in the 800m final of the UK Youth Development League as well as helping her club, Blackheath & Bromley, to 4x300m relay victory.

But it has also been a season where McDonald, pictured, has topped the year’s U15 rankings in both the 800m and 1,500m, clocking two minutes 6.47 seconds and 4:23.72 respectively.

In doing so, the Putney High School pupil won the 1,500m South of England Inter-County Championship and the South of England 800m title, topping it off in August with the English National title over 1,500m.

McDonald said: “It’s been a great season, with more highs than lows.

“My lowest point was English Schools, winning the 1,500m and then being disqualified. My coach told me not to worry about the disqualification and show everyone what I am made of and enjoy my athletics.”

She added: “The highlights were the South of England championships, where I broke the 39-year-old record in the 800m, and then breaking the UK 800m record for 14 to 15-year-olds, which had been held for 32 years.

“Also up there are beating the English Schools 800m gold medallist, and then winning the English National Championships by beating the Scottish champion.

“Seeing my coach [Phil Kissi] excited was very memorable, and knowing the faith my parents have in me and the support my training group has given me has left me proud to have achieved my goals.”

Kissi said: “Katy-Ann has simply been brilliant, but sometimes I think people need to remember that she is still a young girl who only took up the sport in January 2012 and only started training in June 2012.

“Her achievements have been very positive.”

He added: “The support she has received from her school has been amazing, both academically and in sports, and I can only thank them as they helped tremendously in providing me a platform to get the best out of Katy-Ann.”

McDonald returns to action this weekend in the National Road Relays before she focuses on the London Youth Championships and Regional Schools finals next month.

And there is no rest up next year, as attention falls on the cross-country championships at south of England, national, inter-counties and English school level, as well as the London Virgin mini-marathon.

Kissi said: “As a coach I am conscious of young prodigies fading after a few years so it is important to have that mutual trust for that long term goal and a partnership between her teachers at Putney High School, her parents and her coaching team.”
