Herne Hill Harriers’ veteran athletes stamped their class on the national running scene by winning silver at the British Masters Athletic Federation cross-country relays.

The team of Vic Maughn, Ed Barrow, Tom Conlon, Graham Moyse and Mike Boyle finished second in the M45-54 category behind Salford Harriers at Derby.

The silver success came a week after a Herne Hill M50 squad won gold at the south of England cross-country championships.

Herne Hill were always in second at Derby, however, with a dominant Salford outfit eventually triumphing by more than two and a half minutes.

The in-form Conlon was again the pick of the Harriers squad, running the fastest leg.

Closer to home, a Herne Herne mixed team finished third in the opening East Surrey League fixture at Lloyd Park, Croydon.

Robin Sanderson was first counter in sixth, with Dan Hallam 11th, Mel Edwards 16th and Ieva Lobaciute 31st.

Edwards and Lobaciute were also first and second female finishers respectively on the five-mile course.

New Herne Hill recruit, Matt Munro, ran as a guest and finished 19th.

Herne Hill’s youngsters were in action at Guildford in the Bruce Judd Memorial cross-country relays for U13-U17 athletes, and returned with four teams winning silver medals and a bronze team medals from the six races.

Despite missing some key regulars due to half term, there were some exciting races, notably in the U17M event where two red & black teams challenged South London Harriers throughout the race.

Going into the final half mile, Paul Burgess was tracking the South London athlete but was pipped in the dash to the line to miss out on gold by an agonising metre.

In the U13G event, Guildford turned the tables on the Harriers, winning by five seconds after Herne Hill beat them in the southern cross-country relays the week before.

In the U13B race, Harriers finished second to a good Aldershot team, who had medalled in earlier national relays.

Herne Hill’s other silver medallists were the U17W who chased Guildford home.

The club also had three gold medallists for fastest legs on the day in Clarissa Nicholls (U13G), Oscar Millard (U13B) and Burgess (U17M).

On the road, Chris Busaileh led the Self Transcendence 10-mile race in Battersea Park from start to finish, winning in 52 minutes, two seconds. Jonny Muir was fourth in a personal best time of 57:51.

Less than 24 hours after her performance at Croydon, Edwards was a winner again at the Herne Hill-organised Emer Casey Memorial 10k in Brockwell Park, clocking 39:56.

Owen Hind of Kent AC was the overall race winner in 33:32.

Jeff Cunningham was Harriers’ first male finisher in 36:04, finishing third overall.

Cunningham also led Herne Hill to the team prize, with Sean Fitzpatrick (fifth) and Andrew Grigg (sixth) completing the scoring trio. Winston Parkinson (ninth) was first V40 in 39:30.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Cowie, another Herne Hill debutant, finished 12th in the Beachy Head marathon in three hours 20:45.

In the pick of parkrun action, Mike Cummings was a winner at Crystal Palace, clocking 16:40.

Elsewhere, Mohammed Ismail was second at Brockwell Park in 16:50, while Tom Boswell was fourth at Dulwich in 17:48.
