Herne Hill Harriers’ Alex Brown and Jaden Kennedy won gold medals at the London Youth Games cross-country, as athletes from the Tooting Bec-based club recorded a string of impressive performances.

Brown won the U15G race and Kennedy the U11B event at Parliament Hill, with Clarissa Nicholls claiming silver in the U13G category.

Harriers’ senior men’s squad of Alan Barnes, Ross MacDonald, Jeff Cunningham and John Tayleur were also racing at the spiritual home of cross-country where they scooped silver medals in the team event of the London Championships.

The championships and the London Youth Games (Europe's largest youth sports festival that includes competitions in 30 different sports) were both staged at Parliament Hill, with conditions underfoot wet and muddy following days of rain.

Following Brown - who took up the lead at half-way and won comfortably by 50 metres – in the U15G race was Lucy Olsen (fifth), Eloise O’Shaughnessy (eighth), Eimear Griffin (10th), Zoe Tompkins (14th) and Tatianna Cooke (19th).

A team representing Wandsworth, including a Herne Hill contingent, were overall winners in the U15G event.

Brown was running in the U15G category at the London Youth Games for the first time, having won the U13G title in 2013.

Racing in the U13G event, Lulu King (fourth) was two places behind Nicholls, with Amy Miller finishing in 12th. In the U13B race, Mohammed Ali was fourth and Freddie Hodgson sixth.

Meanwhile, Alex Brown’s sister, Kate, was fifth in the U17G race.

Herne Hill’s junior athletes were also in action at the Camberley open cross-country races on Sunday and returned with a large medal haul after recording a series of good performances on a testing, muddy course.

Arabelle Bailey led the way with a win, beating all the girls and boys in the U9 race. Maisie Collis then won the U11G race with Jess Butland third. In the U11B race, newcomer Jack Hedges finished second.

Mohammed Ali won the U13B race, heading a Harriers’ one-two-three-four, with Marlon Fernandez, Jacob Alley and Toby Reynolds filling the positions.

Lucy Olsen won the U15G race ahead of club-mate Eloise O’Shaughnessy. In the U15B race, Paul Chalobah led the field home from Mohammed Mohammud, with Joel Cruywagen completing a team win.

The U17W were also gold medallists through Daisy Setyabule, Alice Setyabule and Alex Rispoli, who were second, third and fourth respectively.

In other age categories, the U13B were first and the U13G second.

On the road, Andrew Grigg was 102nd at the Brighton 10k, clocking 36 minutes, 57 seconds, while in notable parkrun action, Mohammed Ismail moved another run closer to a century of finishes as he came home first at Dulwich Park, clocking 16:31.
