Marvin Popoola and Katie Snowden swapped the red and black of Herne Hill Harriers for the red and white of England as the track athletes represented their country at separate indoor meetings in Europe.

Sprinter Popoola recorded two personal bests of 6.75 seconds and 6.74secs in a heat and final of the 60m at the Vienna Indoor Classic, breaking club records in the process.

Popoola was third in his heat before finishing fourth in the final in what was his senior international debut racing for an England.

Racing in Bratislava for England, Snowden was fourth in the 1,500m at the Elan Indoor Meeting.

Having been part of an England B team at the Loughborough International meeting outdoors last May, the Bratislava match was Snowden’s first full senior international vest for her country just over a month before her 21st birthday.

Snowden had earned her place in the England team over 1,500m – hitherto regarded as her secondary event as she has specialised at 800m – by placing a fine third at the BMC Indoor Grand Prix meeting in Sheffield in January.

In that race, the 20-year-old clocked four minues 22.15secs, an improvement of more than seven seconds in comparison to her previous indoor best and close to her outdoor best and women’s club record of 4:18.71 set in June last year.

Hannah Edwards, meanwhile, ran a 600m indoors personal best at Sportcity, Manchester, clocking 1:36.22.

Edwards will now turn her attention to the 800m and will race at a BMC meeting at Lee Valley on Wednesday.

There was further Herne Hill success on the track at the London Indoor Games. Those impressing included 200m runners Jamal Rhoden-Stevens (22.16) Byron Robinson (22.49) and U20 Raheem Stroude-McLean (23.97). Elizabeth Donnelly completed a 200m and 400 m double, clocking 27.37 and 61.09. Rushane Thomas clocked 8.17 in the 60m hurdles.

In other results, Lewis Lloyd was 24th in the BUCS cross-country championship at Stanmer Park, while John Tayleur was 65th in the B race after a heavy fall on a downhill section of the course.

On the road, Harriers’ Lee van Haeften was third at the Dewsbury 10k in 31:57.

Robin Jones was fourth at the Mornington Chasers’ Regents Park 10k in 34:55.

Simon Messenger raced to a personal best at the London Winter Run 10k of 36:10 in finishing ninth.

A Herne Hill senior team comprising Andy Weir, Jeff Cunningham, Jack Hillier (fastest individual runner) and Mohammed Ismail were easy winners at the East Surrey League cross country relays on Wimbledon Common, while a Herne Hill B team was fifth.

Harriers also won the young athletes’ event, with Oscar Millard running the fastest time of the day, topping a list containing a Herne Hill top-five.

In the pick of parkrun action, Chris Busaileh was the first runner at Dulwich in 16:27, with Mark Blee posting a personal best of 18:16 for 16th.

Only hours before the East Surrey League relays, Ismail was a winner of the Brockwell Park event in 17:00.
