Epsom’s Emelia Gorecka says she is proud of her overall performances at European Indoor Athletics Championships in Prague.

The 20-year-old went into the women’s 3,000m final on Saturday after winning her heat in a new personal best of nine minutes 3.97 seconds.

Unfortunately she spent the majority of the final trailing at the back of the pack, eventually finishing 12th and in last place in 9:06.79.

Russia’s Yelena Korobkina claimed gold in 8:47.62.

“I wasn’t in the right place at the right time,” admitted cross-country specialist Gorecka.

“I was for a few laps and then it went. It’s just the tell-tale signs of me not doing enough track work.”

She added: “I thought I could make it through the rounds pretty strongly, but once I left the pace that was it.

“But it was brilliant opportunity to come here and get the work done. This was my first championships and I made the final.

“Obviously I’ve done it through cross-country training, it’s a bit crazy, but I’m proud about what I’ve achieved.”
