Croydon’s men’s and women’s team enjoyed a clear home victory at the Southern Athletics League Division Two match at Croydon Arena on Sunday.

The hosts notched 13 A wins and 12 B event victories throughout the afternoon to finish top of the pile on 228 points, ahead of Luton (176pts), Eastbourne (153pts) and Enfield and Haringey (80pts).

A returning Twinelle Hopeson impressed with 100m hurdles (15.23secs) and 100m (12.43secs) wins.

The ever improving Tosin Salami picked up a hard fought first in the 200m in 26.11secs, while Stevie Lawrence (pole vault, 2.40m) and Emma Fossett (javelin, 34.97m) bagged wins on the field.

In the men’s section, GB junior cross-country international Peter Chambers won the 1,500m (four minutes 18.05 seconds) and 3,000m (8:58.6).

Harvey Stainthorpe was first in the 400m in 51.27secs, while James Eccles (400m hurdles, 67.08secs) and Glenn Barden (3,000m steeplechase, 11:27) took maiden victories in their events in this league.

On the field, English Schools shot put hopeful David Olajiga staked his claim with a 12.58m throw and Verter Oppong-Kyei won the triple jump in 11.88m.

The women’s 4x100m team of Joscelyn and Twinelle Hopeson, Teynay Moore and Tosin Salami stormed to victory in 48.8secs.

The result gives the team an outside chance of promotion to the league’s top tier that they dropped out of last season.

In midweek Rosenheim League action also at Croydon Arena, the men’s squad picked up a rare win in the league holding off the challenge from Hercules Wimbledon, Serpentine, Belgrave, Holland Sports and Herne Hill.

Team captain Matthew Pepper (200m, 24.08secs), Harvey Stainthorpe (400m, 52.31secs), Omar Reid (discus, 41.01m) and Verter Oppong-Kyei (long jump, 5.99m) enjoyed 1st’s on the evening.

The relay team of Pepper, Stainthorpe, Dylan Gordon and Samson Chinaka teamed up to triumph in the 4x200m.

On Saturday, Croydon’s young athletes faced stiff opposition at Norman Park in Bromley in the UK Youth Development League in the Southern Premier One, the highest tier in this league.

Serena Mitchell, Rhiannon Gayle, Kayla Bowley and Marcia Sey grabbed the headlines by setting a league record in the under 15 girl’s 4x100m of 49.0secs. It also betters a 34 year-old club record.

Gayle had earlier completed an under 15 girl’s double win in 200m (26.0secs) and 300m (41.3). Sey was well clear in the 75m hurdles in 11.6secs.

The fellow relay team of the under 13 boys (Ayo Salako, Tyvon Innis, Raid Boukari, Ange Gbeyo), under 15 boys (Sheyon Sinclair, Exra Rodrigues, Ayo Daniel, Ugo Ajeh) and under 13 girls (Cycy Adebakin, Jennifer Chukwu, Zoe Dake, Toni Bryan) were all victorious in the sprint relays.

Croydon finished fifth out of six on a competitive afternoon, but still remain last in the league with two fixtures to go.
