The road to Rio begins now for Jade Lally as she sets her focus on qualification.

The 28-year-old from Mitcham claimed her fourth British women's discus title in sweltering hot conditions at Alexander stadium, Birmingham, on Saturday with a final round effort of 57.37m.

She snatched victory from hometown favourite Eden Francis by nearly two metres, while Sale Harriers Manchester Kirsty Law was third with 52.15m.

“It’s my first competition since mid-May so I’m happy with the win and it was a good distance,” said Lally.

It was the south Londoner’s first competition back since an operation to mend her oblique muscle which she strained at the Loughborough International Athletics meeting six weeks ago.

However, the recovery process has not given Lally, who has a season’s best of 59.90m in Kingston, Jamaica, in May, sufficient time to push for a Team GB qualification spot at next month’s World Championships in Beijing, China, so she will now target on reaching Rio 2016.

“I had an operation six weeks ago so I need to find competitions,” Lally added.

“I hope I have a chance for Beijing but it’s probably out of the question.

“I’m looking at the bigger picture after being ill, with Rio’s the bigger goal.”
