Teenager Rechmial Miller established himself as Hercules Wimbledon AC’s best ever sprinter when he won Commonwealth Youth Games 100m silver in Samoa on Monday.

The 17-year-old faced a busy day of competition, with three races in three-and-a-half hours.

First, he took his heat in 10.54 seconds and then lowered his personal best to 10.40secs in winning his semi-final to equal the Hercules Wimbledon cub record.

In the final, Miller lowered his lifetime best once more to 10.39secs, breaking the club senior and U20 club records, to take silver behind South Africa’s Tlotliso Leotleta, who clocked 10.20secs.

Miller’s Commonwealth silver adds to the bronze medal he won in the IAAF World Youth championships in Columbia in July.

His time also eclipses that achieved by his dad, Paul, who coaches many of Hercules Wimbledon’s young sprinters, who clocked a wind-assisted 10.4secs in 1985.

Meanwhile, one of Miller’s proteges, Jaleel Roper, continued to improve when he broke his own UK boys U13 200m record (23.4secs) in winnning a sprint meeting at Lee Valley Athletics Centre last week in 23.35secs.

Roper also won his 100m race in 11.63.

Not done there, Roper also won a sprint double at the Tom Lintern Medals Meeting in Crawley clocking 11.74secs and 24.12secs, and he also won the 100m at the South London Athletics Network Super 8 meeting at Wimbledon Park on Sunday in 11.8secs.

Lloyd Smith won the U15 boys' 800m, Maya Marek the U15 girls' 200m, Adaeze Onyejekwe and Tamira Webster their U13 girls' 100m races, and Darcy O’Shea won the U13 girls' high jump.

Hercules Wimbledon's track and field training sessions take place at Wimbledon Park athletics stadium on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6.30pm and Sunday mornings at 10.30am. Further details from coaching coordinator Maurice Sharp on 020 8337 8707.
