Herne Hill Harriers youngsters helped Wandsworth come out on top in the cross-country curtain-raiser to the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games on Parliament Hill.

Individual winners from the Harriers squad were Jaden Kennedy (U13 boys), Lulu King (U13 girls) and Eimear Griffin (U15 girls).

These victories helped the borough of Wandsworth win the event while Harriers athletes representing Southwark, Merton and Lambeth also had finished inside the top 10 individuals rankings.

Senior athletes raced for their club teams in the London Cross-Country Championship at the same venue, and by the time they were in action the course had been nicely churned up courtesy of the Youth Games races earlier in the day.

Harriers’ men and women’s teams placed a good fifth and sixth in their races that were 10km and 6km respectively.

First home for the Harriers men was Alan Barnes, placing 12th of 353 finishers in 34 minutes 53 seconds, while clubmate Simon Coombes (35:58) was awarded the gold medal for being first M40 athlete in the race.

Julia Wedmore (26:02) led the women’s team in 32nd place of 203 who completed their course.

Some of the same squad of youngsters travelled to the Camberley Open the next day for another annual cross country competition.

Still on fire after his win in the London Youth Games, Kennedy took the U13 boys title.

Other individual places were earned by Christo Chilton (first - U11 boys), Annabella Bailey (first - U11 girls) and Jess Buckland (second - U13 girls).

Team titles were won in the U13 girls (Jess Buckland, Poppy Craig McFeely and Isobel Pennicard) and the U13 boys. (Jaden Kennedy, Ben Harrison and Jacob Harrison).
