Hercules Wimbledon’s talented young sprinter Jaleel Roper made a winning return to action after two months out with a hamstring injury.

The 13-year-old took the boys’ U15 100m title at the club’s annual young athletes open meeting at Wimbledon Park on Sunday.

Roper, the top UK U13 sprinter last season, made a solid return to action in his first race since taking the silver medal in the England U20 championships at Sheffield in February, where he picked up the injury.

He won in 12.07 seconds battling against a strong 3.7 metres per second headwind.

Coach Paul Miller said: “I am happy with his form. He was running strongly and with the strong wind against him I reckon his time was worth 11.4 secs or 11.5 secs if there had been no wind.

“He is clearly fit again and we can now get down to training for the challenges ahead this summer.”

Roper’s clubmate and training partner Miles Ayoola was second in 12.75 secs.

Another of Miller’s training group, Zipporah Golding, also showed fine winning form in her first outdoor race of the year.

She stormed to victory in the U13 100m in a personal best of 13.5secs, a big improvement on her previous best of 13.9secs set last September.

Another Hercules Wimbledon winner was Ciara Kennedy who took the girls U15 400m in an inaugural meeting record of 67.08 secs as the event was being staged for the first time.

Despite the gusty conditions, more than half-a-dozen meeting records were broken.

The meeting was being staged for the 35th time and among spectators was Ron Down, who was one of the organisers of the inaugural meeting at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in 1980 where he was responsible for the printed programme.

It was the third time the meeting has been staged at Hercules Wimbledon’s home track at Wimbledon Park.

Hercules Wimbledon’s Chad Miller, the South of England 400m silver medallist, also posted a lifetime best in finishing runner-up in the U17 100m in 11.18 secs Freddie Arkell was a double winner taking his boys U13 100 and 200m races while Alex Forbes won the U13 800m.

Tom Beare won his boys’ U11 1,000m race, Bella Williams won the girls’ U11 600m race and Aklbane Ferry was first in the girls, U13 800m race with Tara Bartlett winning her 100m race in the same age group.

This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon open their senior track and field programme with their first South Athletics League fixture at Hastings on Saturday.
