Ruth Clifton, Liam White and Emma Headley all claimed top 50 finishes at the National Cross Country Championships last Saturday.

Clifton, below, is a Hercules Wimbledon athlete but ran for Thames Hare & Hounds at Parliament Hill Fields and finished 24th in the senior women’s 8km championships, crossing the line in 30 minutes exactly.

Wimbledon’s White, individual bronze medalist in the Surrey junior championships earlier this winter, came 50th in the U20 10km men’s race in 34:31 and Headley was 46th in the girls’ U15 4km race in 15:19.

Hercules’ men produced their best effort at the championships since finishing 21st in 1979 as they came 26th out of 125 teams.

Kieran White, a member of the bronze medal-winning team in the Surrey championships, led them home as he finished 157th in the 12km race in 40:50.

The club entered a ladies team for only the third time in their history and came 62nd, Amy Aronson their best-placed finisher in 165th in 34:08.
