Weybridge CC skipper Joel Pope wants his charges to keep calm and carry on, despite hitting the top of the Surrey Championships Premier Division.

Pope’s charges overcame Wimbledon by two wickets on Saturday to leapfrog the reigning champions and take their place at the summit.

Having been set 295 to win, SJ Erwee (110) and Thushara Managei (82) helped the hosts chase down the mammoth target.

However, rather than get carried away with leading the pack, Pope wants to approach each game between now and the end of the season as if they are still the underdogs.

“We just need to carry as we are, we’re only six points ahead and things can change very quickly,” he said.

“We need to keep on doing what we are doing. We could do with keeping sides down to 260 runs – we won’t be able to chase down 294 every week.

“If we can win our next two games, then we have a chance, but for now there is a long way to go.”

The win over Wimbledon, which included Erwee’s fourth consecutive century, was aided by the presence of Surrey all rounder Tom Curran, who hit the 10 runs needed for victory off the last over.

Pope said: “Tom was excellent, he batted well, bowled well and fielded well, and then he hit a six and four off the last over to win the match.

“In truth, I was upset we let Wimbledon get to 294, but the pitch was feathery, which made it a good wicket for batting.

“Because of the sunshine, the outfield was lightning quick so it was always going to be difficult to play containing cricket, and Wimbledon found that out as well.”
