Sutton CC skipper Johann Myburgh has put the side’s remarkable turnaround in form down to getting the basics right.

After their six-wicket thumping of Premier Division title chasers Sunbury on Saturday, Sutton have now recorded three consecutive victories.

Prior to a win over Banstead on July 13, Sutton had gone nine games without success and were stranded in the bottom two.

But the margin of victory over Sunbury will make have the rest of the division taking note, especially leaders Wimbledon, who host Sutton this weekend.

Sunbury were skittled for just 108, and Sutton were home and dry before rain stopped play inside 23 overs.

Myburgh said: “We are playing good cricket at the moment because we are doing the basic things right.

“It is the same in all sports, if you do the simple things right on a consistent basis, you will win most games.

“Against Sunbury we put in the best fielding display of the whole season – we got two run-outs which put them under pressure and meant we controlled the run rate.

“Doing the basic fielding right made it difficult for them to make runs.”

Although the chase target was relatively short, Sutton were fighting the fast-approaching rain as well as the Sunbury attack.

Myburgh said: “We were probably more aggressive with the bat than we would have normally been but the rain was coming.

“We did get an interruption but by then the majority of the runs had been ticked off.”

He added: “Wimbledon will be a tough match, they bowled us out for 90 earlier in the season.

“But we are a much more confident side now and we will come up with a plan to take them on.”
