As far as double acts go, they are more Hinge and Brackett than Batman and Robin, but Test Match Special is the perfect home for Jonathan Agnew and Geoffrey Boycott.

Their on-air relationship makes for addictive listening, not only for their incredible insight into the game, but for the clear friendship they share.

Agnew, known as Aggers, said: “We are very good friends on air and off air.

“He is a brilliant bloke to work with, incredibly professional, very incisive, and he will tell you about a batsman’s strengths and weaknesses within a moment of watching him play.

“He might repeat himself for four hours, but that is when you have to control him and send him in different directions.”

The duo first shared the airwaves when Boycott joined the TMS team in 2005, bringing a no-nonsense style of cricket analysis.

Agnew said: “We’re a very good team – I don’t think you can have a programme like TMS without someone who is a little rough round the edges. “He is abrasive and outspoken, but very heartfelt.

“He never says anything without meaning it – he is not a rent-a-quote that pops up and changes his mind every five minutes.

“He is very considered and will think long and hard about what he is going to say about life or cricket.”
