Cil van der Merwe’s unbeaten 63-ball 86 helped Malden Wanderers’ first XI back to winning ways with a 98-run success against Camberley at Cambridge Avenue, writes Steve Morgan.

A good start was needed after last week’s poor show at Ashtead, and openers Alex Butler (76) and Will Clapp (19) delivered to put on 64 at the top of the order.

The Stags were 156 for six when van der Merwe cut loose, hitting four sixes and eight fours to hoist the total to 252 for 9 after 50 overs.

Michael Cottrell (4-44) removed all but one of Camberley’s top five with the score on 36, to put the visitors on the back foot.

Tim Burns (65) and Trevor McGeer (48) offered resistance, but two wickets each for Will Sabey, Will Riley and Neil Mander dismissed the visitors for 154.

Captain James Wackett said: “252 was always likely to be a tough chase, thanks to Alex’s knock and some wonderful striking by Cil.

"Michael’s fine opening spell, with some good supporting bowling and excellent catching rounded off a good team performance.”

Malden's second string continued their promising start with an 88-run victory at Sunbury.

Half-centuries from openers Spencer Stephens (83) and Paul Barford (76) helped Stags to 251 for 5 from 50 overs.

In reply, Sunbury were dismissed for 163, with seamer Tom Long taking 6-23.

The firsts travel to Spencer next Saturday, with the seconds entertaining Normandy.
