Malden Wanderers skipper James Wackett admitted a draw was a fair result as his side were left frustrated by Banstead on Saturday, wrties Steve Morgan.

Alex Butler’s 103 was the highlight at Cambridge Avenue as Malden posted 256 from 66 overs thanks to with lower-order cameos from Danny Murphy (22) and a punchy effort from Giles Puckle (21).

Banstead opener Tom Lancefield led the way in reply, with a rapid 82 in a first-wicket stand of 93 with Daniel Newton (33) giving their side a good platform.

Though Malden chipped away to reduce the visitors to 147 for four, Richard Lock (54) and Josh Stainer put them in the box seat, adding 52 for the fifth wicket.

However, some canny spin bowling in a long spell from veteran Puckle (4-80 from 22 overs), trapping key man Lock leg at 228 for seven, ensured a tight finish with Banstead settling for a winning draw at 237 for eight.

“We were pegged back in the middle overs by some good bowling some tentative batting,” said Wackett.

“Lancefield’s innings was exceptional – it took a fantastic caught and bowled by Will Riley to dismiss him. A draw was a fair result.”

Spencer Stephens’ 89 was the standout in Malden's second string's winning draw at Leatherhead.

Malden posted 225 all out – Michael Wakefield taking six for 59 – but an unbroken last-wicket stand of 58 between Thomas Gamble (41) and Alasdair Waters took the visitors to 161 for nine.

The first team entertain Farnham on Saturday at 11.30am, while the seconds travel to Guildford (1.30pm start).

Elsewhere, Francois Vainker (4-50) and Philip Mann (4-40) blowled Weybrigde to a third Premier Division win of the season with a convincing victory at home to struggling Valley End.

The pair combined to dismis the visitors for 177 as they chased the hosts’ mammoth 294 for eight off 60 overs.

Earlier, skipper Sarel Erwee (78), Tom Friend (47) and Thushara Managei (58) had all fired in the middle to put Valley End on the back foot at the change of innings.

Walton and Chesington sit one and two in Division Two after wins at the weekend.

Walton secured their fifth win of the campaign with a comfortable eigtht wicket win at Esher, where evergreen Mark Bainbridge took 4-32 to help dismiss the hosts for 134.

Brother Paul Bainbridge then hit an unbeaten 74 in the successful run chase.

A 148-run partnership between James McNeil (70*) and Matthew Alldis (90) saw Chessington to a seven wicket win at Ashford, having been set 174 to win thanks  to Wendell Sebastian’s 118-ball 109 for the hosts.
