Surrey’s Dominic Sibley showed his class as Malden Wanderers Is went down to table-topping Ashtead on Saturday at Cambridge Avenue, writes Steven Morgan.

The 19-year-old followed figures of 5-59 with a composed 76 not out to steer the visitors to a five-wicket win.

Will Sabey’s 61 was the mainstay of the home side’s 210 all out, but the fragility of the middle order was again evident as the Stags lost four wickets for four runs to slip from a handily placed post-lunch 150 for 4 to 154 for 8.

Though there was late-order resistance from Will Riley (22) and Rafeh Jafri (19), it was a case of what might have been.

In reply, Ashtead openers Tom Laudy and Michael Sanderson added 51 to provide a solid platform. However Sanderson’s dismissal, bowled by Giles Puckle for 54 with the score at 102, gave Wanderers a sniff.

When Ashtead were reduced to 149 for five, the game looked evenly poised.

Sibley, however, had other ideas and with the help of Matthew Friedlander (25 not out) steered the vistors home without further loss.

Skipper James Wackett was philosophical in defeat, knowing Sibley’s quality had turned the game Ashtead’s way.

“He batted and bowled beautifully and made the difference between the two teams,” he said.

“Next week's match against East Molesey will be another good test of how far we have developed as a team this year.”

Wanderers remain fourth in Surrey Championship Division One.
