Ashtead CC skipper Tom Deighton knows the maths, but the leaders of Division One in the Surrey Championship are about more than simply winning promotion.

Following last weekend’s five-wicket demolition of Farnham, which featured an unbeaten 116 from Dom Sibley and Deighton’s figures of 6-60, Ashtead are 44 points clear with five games remaining.

Next up for Ashtead are home fixtures against Old Whitgiftians and Camberley – both are struggling at the wrong end of the table, which is significant given Deighton’s maths.

“If we win the next two games, we should be home and dry for promotion,” he said.

“But we want to go further than that and win the division with, hopefully, an unbeaten record between now and the end of the season.

“We need to keep that winning mentality and take the momentum into next season, that would be the ideal.”

He added: “Promotion was the target at the start of the season, although we could never imagine it would have been quite as good as this.”
