Wimbledon win Ryman Surrey Championship Premier Division
12:21pm Thursday 25th August 2011 in Club Cricket By Graham Moody, Sports Reporter
Wimbledon have been crowned the Ryman Surrey Championship Premier Division champions.
A 40-run victory over last year’s title winners Reigate Priory in tricky conditions on Saturday secured them the title.
With second-placed Sunbury’s game falling foul of the weather, they would have won the title even if they had lost on Saturday, something they avoided thanks to a couple of unlikely heroes.
Wicketkeeper Augustus Kennedy, batting at eight, and number 11 Graham Porter produced a last wicket partnership of 68 to take them from 110-9 to 178 all out, Kennedy scoring 58 not out, his best ever score with the bat.
Earlier in the innings, Sebastian Franke-Matthecka, Steve Hobson, Gerry Penfold and Darren Hooey all went without scoring as Wimbledon collapsed from 47-0.
Reigate started brightly in reply, moving to 56-3 before suffering their own collapse.
Will Leith took three quick wickets to reduce them to 80-6 and despite a late rally, Martin Kain’s run-out of Stuart Hume saw them bowled out for 138, securing Wimbledon the title.
Leith ended with figures of 4-27 from 10 overs, his best figures of the season.
Celebrations will continue when they host relegation-threatened Ashstead this Saturday in their final home game and penultimate league game.
