Snow caused the Robins to lose their footing and brought an end to a fledging run, says striker

Carshalton Athletic striker Ola Sogbanmu lays the blame for one win in six Ryman Premier Division games at the foot of January’s snowy weather.

The 21-year-old scored the opener against Bury Town at Colston Avenue on Saturday, but an equalising penalty just before the break and two second half strikes saw the visitors run out 3-1 winners and the Robins return to the foot of the table.

But, despite their predicament, Sogbanmu is confident the team will avoid the drop and that a run of results is on the cards.

He said: “I thought with the way the game was going, my goal was going to give us the lift to get more goals and win the game, but it was not meant to be.

“We all know we’re good players – it is just a case of doing it on the pitch. We had a good 45 minutes against Bury, but we need to keep it going for 90 minutes.

“It was two individual mistakes that cost us in the second half – but it happens, and because we’re down at the bottom, it seems to be happening more and more. We have to take it on the chin and move onto the next game.”

He added: “If we can win one game and then two games we can get a run going. Before the snowy period we had started getting a run going – so the snow set us back.”

Sogbanmu has eight goals to his name so far this season, and although scoring is in his make-up, relegation fights are not.

He said: “I am enjoying the battle, to an extent. It is very hard, this is my first season in a relegation battle so I am not used to it, but it is an experience and as long as we can get out of it, I will be happy.”

The Robins, two points adrift at the bottom and having played seven games more than their nearest rivals, go to East Thurrock United this weekend.
