George Francomb reckons Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with the League Two leaders is the perfect platform on which to build the rest of the Dons season.

The winger, who hit his first league goal of the season to put the Dons ahead, also took comfort from the rear-guard action that restricted Chesterfield to nothing more than an equaliser.

Francomb’s season has been blighted by injury, and he admitted his target of six goals this term is unlikely to be met.

However, despite his own short-comings, the 22-year-old says the team can take positive vibes into this weekend’s trip to Burton Albion.

“It was a good performance and if we can carry on playing like that it is a good platform to build on for the rest of the season,” he said.

“We were under pressure for the last 20 minutes against the best team in the league, we stuck to our jobs and the most important thing is we did not concede another sloppy goal.

“So mentally, going into the next game, we can build on that.”

He added: “We were strong and resolute against a very good Chesterfield team, and it was a good point in the end.

“I wish there had been more goals from me, but it has been one of those seasons, it has not really got going, so I have been disappointed.

“But hopefully I can get a run in the team, we can push on for a strong finish and I can get a few more goals.”

Boss Neal Ardley has hinted his current squad is the best in his time at the club, leaving Francomb and his team-mates in no doubt where it leaves them.

Ardley made five changes to the team that lost to York, with two – Luke Moore and Will Antwi – not making the 18-man squad on Tuesday.

Francomb said: “You have to relish the competition for places, if you are not playing well you could be out of the team.

“I have been in and out this season in a shallower squad than it is now, so I have to keep my performances high.”
