Brentford made it back to back home wins with a 1-0 win over Crawley Town at Griffin Park on Tuesday night.

Victory leaves the Bees nine points clear of third placed Rotherham - 1-0 losers at Sheffield United last night - with five games left, as the prospect of promotion to the Championship inches closer.

The match was marred late in the second half when Crawley Town defender Paul Connolly appeared to strike a Bees fan in the Paddock section of the Braemar Road stand following an alltercation after the had gone out of play.

The club has confirmed it is investigating the incident.

Brentford were made to work hard for all three points, when despite some free flowing football at times it took nearly an hour before Jonathan Douglas made the vital breakthrough.

In the opening quarter of the match Clayton Donaldson broke clear on the left hand side of the box, but shot over the bar.

Shortly after a long ball through the middle confused the defender and allowed Donaldson to hook a shot towards Paul Jones, which the keeper held.

At the other end David Button made a comfortable save when Josh Simpson turned sharply inside the box and fired in a low shot.

Early in the second half Alan Judge shot just wide of the right hand post from inside the box, while Stuart Dallas shot over the bar from the edge of the box.

Douglas nodded the Bees ahead when Judge crossed from the left and his glancing header escaped the clutches of Jones to roll into the net.

Button had to be alert to race out of his box and head a long ball clear of danger.

In the closing stages a great cross from Jake Bidwell ended with Dallas' shot being blocked while substitute Jake Reeves saw his 25 yard shot deflected for a corner as Brentford saw out time.

Brentford: Button, McCormack, Tarkowski, Craig, Bidwell; Douglas, Judge (sub Trotta 73), Saville (sub Reeves 68), Forshaw (sub Diagouraga 89); Donaldson, Dallas.

Subs (not used): Bonham, O'Connor, Dean, Grigg.
