AFC Wimbledon player of the year Barry Fuller has enjoyed his first season at the club but hopes to push on towards the League Two play-offs next term.

Fuller, 29, joined Wimbledon from Barnet and has quickly established himself as fans’ favourite, picking up the WISA Allen Batsford player of the year, the player's player of the year, the junior Dons player of the year [with Ross Worner] and the Radio WDON player of the year, before Saturday’s game.

Fuller has made 47 appearances so far this season, more than any other player, and has worn the captain’s armband in the absence of Alan Bennett.

“I love it, since I’ve been here I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s been a great season for me personally, especially as it’s my first," he said.

“When you come to a club and you don’t really know anyone and you’re made to feel welcome from day one, that helps you settle in.

“And that’s helped me play the way I’ve played this season because if you come somewhere and you’re not happy, performances will dip.

“Everyone at the club has made me feel very welcome, the fans as well, and it just shows their appreciation for the way I play, and I’m just glad and thankful that what I’ve given on the pitch has been noticed.”

Fuller, though, knows the club needs to improve its consistency to push forward.

Defeat on Saturday means the Dons can still finish anywhere between ninth and 19th with one game to play – away at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

And the former Charlton trainee admits there’s a sense of underachievement, even having bettered the points total from the club’s previous seasons in League Two.

“It’s been tough at times,” he added. “There’s been ups and downs, and if you look over the years of League Two sides that go up, there’s one or two that stand out.

“The other sides that do well in the league are just down to their consistency and obviously if you’re consistent you’re going to be in them play-offs, and maybe that’s where we’ve fallen a bit short this year.

“We feel a little bit underachieved because we look at our squad and feel it’s good enough to have pushed on, but we cant dwell, we broke the club’s points record so there’s a lot of positive to come from this year.

“We’ve got to be looking to the play-offs next season, and hopefully we can kick on, and that’ll be our target to take the club forward where it deserves to go.”
