Walton Casuals boss Hams is itching to get going
Walton Casuals boss Mark Hams has revealed he will not sit still this summer as he attempts to make the Stags a Ryman Division One South force to be reckoned with.
Hams’ men had Martin Dynan sent off as they crashed 6-0 at Hythe Town on Saturday to bring the curtain down on an otherwise successful campaign.
Casuals, among the division’s top 10 all season, finished nine points and four places off the play-offs, having been spared relegation this time last year.
The Waterside Drive outfit broke a host of club records along the way, but the one the manager is not happy with is the highest number of goals – 94 – conceded in a season.
And Hams revealed work had already started on making his team harder to beat next term.
“There is an old saying that says goals win matches and cleansheets win championships – that will not change,” he said.
“I’m satisfied, not happy. We finished higher than Walton & Hersham for the first time and we’ve broken loads of records.
“We’ve finished higher in the league, got more points, scored more goals and won more matches than we ever have. But I cannot hide from the fact we have conceded the highest number of goals ever too and that is awful.
“We only finished nine points off the play-offs and I could easily rattle off three games we should have won.
“I know where the problems lie. It is not just the back four. We need more people with that desire not to concede goals.
“I’ve got a shopping list of people I want to bring in. What we have done this season will help with that.”
