Dowson: Time will tell for Ks boss Tommy

Former Ks boss Alan Dowson has backed Tommy Williams as the right man to replace him at Kingsmeadow, but only results will prove him right.

The 43-year-old called time on his Kingstonian career last month but, having spent some time with family, is already after a swift return to the game.

Williams has added Alan Inns and Nathaniel Pinney to the squad he inherited from his predecessor, with the former being someone Dowson had repeatedly tried to sign over the past two years.

A key move for the new incumbent, who secured the services of Matt Drage and Andre McCollin for another season last week, has been to secure the services of goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey.

But no matter how many sensible moves Williams makes off the pitch, it is what happens on the pitch that counts.

“I hope he does well,” said Dowson.

“Getting Rob onside was the key signing. He is the club and once he signed you knew the majority would follow.

“He has made some great signings and he has done brilliantly to keep a lot of the squad together, but Tommy will know as much as I do that this is a results business.

“He is a good lad. He’s won the league under me and knows Kingston and the area really well. He knows what football at this level is all about.

“Results determine how you do in this game and only time will tell.”

Dowson is currently in the market for a new job, but, having been in a similar position when he left Walton & Hersham prior to join Ks, he is aware work may not fall straight into his lap.

“When I left Walton in the October I didn’t get a sniff of a job until the Ks job came up that December,” he added.

“No jobs come up in the summer – I know that.  Even I used to win manager of the month in June and July. I’ve got to be patient.

“It might be a couple of months, but I will be keeping my ear to the ground.
“It has got to be the right job though.”

Kingstonian have added pre-season friendlies with Tooting & Mitcham United and Merstham to their schedule.
