AFC Wimbledon defender Andy Frampton has retired from football with immediate effect.

The 35-year-old has suffered with an ankle injury for much of the season, and finally admitted defeat and hung up his boots today [Thursday].

Frampton joined Dons from Gillingham in June 2013, making 34 appearances in his first season.

However, a summer injury curtailed his start to this campaign, although his comeback was a memorable one when he wore the captain's armband when Dons beat the Franchise 3-2 in the Johnstone's Paint trophy in October.

He would go on to make just five more appearances, before breaking his ankle and triggering the beginning of the end.

Frampton's announcement come less than a week after 37-year-old David Connolly also retired.

Frampton told Dons Player: "I am gutted, but it is a decision I have made with my family and I believe it is the right time.

"To come back for this season and go on for next season became a hard ask. Not so long ago I did a session on my own as part of my rehabilitation, it was not a particularly heavy session, but for three days afterwards I had a bad reaction."

He added: “I was not the most skilful player or the quickest, but I played with my heart and every challenge and every pass meant the world to me.

"I have had great ups and downs, but I have fantastic memories of being a professional footballer. It has been a privilege to be one of those people lucky enough to have played football for a living.”
