Leatherhead’s new striker Phil Walsh is settling into life at Fetcham Grove, as well as playing in the middle of a three-man attack line.

Walsh, a summer signing from Bath City, has one goal to his name in a terrific start to the season for the Tanners – although they could not turn back-to-back wins into three on the bounce last weekend.

They sit fifth in Ryman Premier Division table having beaten Lewes and Kingstonian, but then losing 1-0 to Staines Town.

Despite the defeat on Saturday, Walsh has been impressed with his new attack buddies.

However, he also admitted that his many years in the game means he can read a player’s strengths and weaknesses very quickly.

The 31-year-old said: “Kiernan [Hughes-Mason] is a really great player to play alongside.

“He is very switched on and easy to read, you know what he is going to do.

“Vas [Karagiannis] is more of a live wire.

“I have played with both types in the past, you let Vas do what he does and link up with Kiernan.”

He added: “I am 31 now, so you learn as you go to pick up players’ habits quickly and read them.

“There is also the added incentive that the manager has put his faith in me and he wants to go through me a lot by playing my way. I am happy with that.”

Tanners returned to action on Tuesday night when they headed to Three Bridges in the Ryman League Cup.

Hughes-Mason was on hand to level matters after the Tanners went a goal behind in the first half.

However, there was to be no winner and the sides could only be divided by penalties, which went 11-10 in favour of Three Bridges.

The league action resumes on Saturday with the visit of Canvey Island.
