Paul Doswell may have believed that Sutton United deserved the three points at Bishop’s Stortford on Saturday, but his opposite number had another view.

Goals from Craig Dundas and Ross Stearn were enough for a 2-0 win in Hertfordshire, and it got United back to winning ways after the home defeat to Hayes & Yeading the weekend before.

Doswell was delighted with what he called a “solid performance that deserved the three points”.

However, Stortford boss Rod Stringer labelled United as physical and direct, and full of cash, telling the Herts & Essex Observer: “If we were spending the money they are and losing games of football then I'd be a bit more disappointed.”

Doswell reacted: “We went about the game in the right way, got the ball down and played – we are more than a physical team playing the long ball.

“And to say we’re spending the money that means we should be winning games is crazy.

“How he knows what our budget is, I don’t know, I certainly haven’t seen him in our monthly budget meetings.”

The three points has lifted United to eighth in the National League South table, outside the play-offs by two points, ahead of this weekend’s visit of Havant & Waterlooville.  They have also been drawn away at Concord Rangers in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy on November 28.

Doswell said: “The draw is a shocker for us, but it is no different than going to Stortford or Hemel in the FA Cup.

“But we do face two teams in excellent form over the next two weekends. “Havant may be in the bottom half of the table, but they beat Oxford City [3-1] and Maidstone [3-1] recently, and Rangers beat Basingstoke [5-0] last time out.”

Doswell is without Tom Bolarinwa, Dan Spence and Bedsente Gomis for the Havant clash, while Kevin Amankwaah and Dan Fitchett both trained this week.
