Sutton United boss Paul Doswell reckons festive momentum is going to be key to his side's chances of lifting the Ryman Premier League title.

United make the short trip to Carshalton Athletic on Monday on the back of a 4-0 FA Trophy hammering at the hands of Eastleigh.

Doswell's men currently top the table - having finished fifth and second in the previous two seasons - and have enjoyed a run to the first round proper of the FA Trophy in 2010.

And the Gander Green Lane chief insists claiming three points against one of their play-off rivals will sign off the last 12 months on a positive note.

"I think getting some momentum now is vital," he said.

"If we can get on an unbeaten winning run of five or six games in the early part of the year we are going to be in a good position by the end of February.

"That is the time when everyone starts looking at what their end of season goal might be.

"Our stated aim is to get promotion. We'll be disappointed if we don't get there having been in a decent position at Christmas."

Carshalton, who haven't got the strongest home record in the division, expect a four-figure crowd at Colston Avenue for the derby clash on Monday - weather permitting.

And Doswell anticipates a stiff challenge from boss Mark Butler's ninth-placed rivals.

"On their day they are one of the best teams in the league," he added.

"Going forward they are one of the better sides I've watched this season.

"When you look at it there are players there with Conference South experience. That is a good side on its day.

"We'll play the same system we always have. We are confident enough in the way we play to win the game.

"We've only played one league game in December but I don't think that will have a major impact. Everyone is just looking forward to playing again."

Sutton's next four games: Dec 27 Carshalton Athletic (a), Jan 1 Tooting & Mitcham (h), 3 Molesey (Surrey Senior Cup, a), 8 Horsham (a).

Dossie on Robins danger men

Byron Harrison - generally considered to be able to play at a much higher level. Quality.

Joel Ledgister - I like the look of him. Alongside Byron, the pair provide their two main threats.

Michael Boateng - going forward he is excellent as is Johnson.

Paul Johnson - was with Mark Butler at Ashford Town and has always been good, solid performer.
