Brentford fans could wake up Christmas morning to one of the worst festive gifts - the departure of boss Andy Scott.

Sheffield United have made an official approach to the League One outfit to speak to their highly-rated manager about the vacancy at Bramall Lane following the departure of Gary Speed.

Scott, signed by the Blades as a player from Sutton United in 1992, has taken the Bees to the brink of the play-offs and the southern area final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in recent weeks.

The 38-year-old, who won the League Two title in his first full season in charge at Griffin Park, made 75 appearances in five years at United before going on to play for Brentford, Oxford United and Leyton Orient.

Bees chief executive Andrew Mills is thought to be meeting with the Griffin Park chief before the weekend to discuss the approach, although Scott is not thought to be the only man on the Sheffield wish-list.

Former Hull City manager Phil Brown, ex-Bees chief Mickey Adams and Burton Albion boss Paul Peschisolido are also rumoured to be in the running.

Brentford, who travel to Yeovil Town on Boxing Day, have declined to comment.
