Fans and objectors to AFC Wimbledon’s new stadium plans can send their thoughts in after the official deadline, the council has said.

The club, which lost its FA Cup match against Liverpool 2-1 on Monday, has formally submitted detailed plans for a 20,000 seater football stadium, 602 flats, shops, parking and a squash and fitness club to Merton Council, which could be built in phases.

Last month the council announced that people have until Monday, January 19 comment on the plans for Plough Lane, but in an unusual move this week it said it would accept responses after the deadline.

It had already extended the deadline by two weeks to five weeks in total due to demands for more time for the community to fully consider the possible impacts of these complex plans.

Wimbledon Park's Conservative councillors, among others, have been calling for a further extension because of the festive period.

In a letter to this newspaper last week they said: "It is disappointing that the council’s consultation period has taken place over the Christmas holidays which smacks of cynicism.

"Although Wimbledon Park councillors have ensured an extension from three weeks to five weeks, this period remains short for such a large application containing so many very complex reports.

"Consideration must be very detailed and at considerable length to avoid any suggestion of excessive haste and lack of care.

"Ultimately this proposal may be examined by the London Mayor, and possibly by the Secretary of State.

"This is a large strategic development on a very tricky site with long term impacts and Merton Council must keep all these points clearly in mind when making a decision on this proposal."

A council spokesperson said: "For anything to do with planning, we are bound by central government planning regulations on timing so we do have to work within relatively strict time constraints.

"We will also accept responses from people, even past the deadline."

The spokesperson urged people to send thoughts in as soon as possible before the planning committee makes a decision in early spring.
