David Connolly raced to his son and family after netting a last-gasp winner in AFC Wimbledon's 3-2 win over Luton Town.

Connolly's dramatic decider settled a pulsating League Two match at the CRRS, and he ran towards the Nongshim Stand on the final whistle to celebrate with his family.

It was the Republic of Ireland international's first goal for the Dons since signing from Portsmouth in January, and the veteran striker was delighted to be back on the scoresheet.

Connolly said: "Obviously to come on and nick the winner was really pleasing. That’s what I do from six yards out.

"My son likes coming to watch me. He’s only six so it’s nice that they were here for that.

"I've tired when I’ve started a couple of games but maybe off the bench is the best route for me at the minute. I’m ok with that because there’s space. I’m an option for the manager."

Connolly showed he has lost none of his predatory guile when he seized on Adebayo Akinfenwa's knock-on and took the ball round Hatters keeper Elliot Justham before slotting home.

It was a suitably stirring end to a thrilling game, and Connolly paid tribute to the Dons' endeavour, with all four Wimbledon strikers playing a part.

"I think all the strikers contributed today, one just happened to nick a goal. Adebayo takes a lot of physical hits," he said.

"Obviously I enjoy playing with him. I think I can read his flick-ons and talk to him so he knows what's around him.

"Imagine all the hits he gets. But hey, I've been getting hits for 20 years."

Connolly scored 42 goals in a two-season spell with Wimbledon and his affection for the Dons has endured.

"When I wasn't involved I'd come and watch, stand in that corner and get told to move on," he said.

"I had some happy times here and it's nice to come back."
