AFC Wimbledon forward Adebayo Akinfenwa admitted Saturday’s winning goal was personal, after Notts County defender Haydn Hollis had promised to bench-press him in the build up to the match.

County held the advantage at half-time thanks to Hollis’ opener, however, Dan Bulman levelled for the Dons on 85 minutes, and the Beast grabbed the winner in stoppage time.

Hollis’ threat to Akinfenwa came when he was quizzed about how he would deal with the striker, famed for his 16 stone physique and powerful style of play.

He said: "I'll bench press him. You've not seen me in the gym. I'm joking.

"He is big and strong, but will he want to run us? We will probably keep a bit higher and keep him working."

Despite opening the scoring for the visitors, Hollis was beaten by Akinfenwa to the ball at the near post as he headed home the late winner.

Akinfenwa said: “I’m a veteran at this level now, and I think it was him [Hollis] I dunked on to score the goal, so I certainly like to do my talking on the pitch.

“I think he’s only 22, and there are some pups at this level who like to talk, and as I said, I’m a veteran now so it’s certainly nice on that front.

“I’m happy with my own performance and more importantly with that of the side, and hopefully we can really kick on now.”

The forward now has two goals in as many league fixtures after a slow start which saw him find the net just once in his first six appearances this season.

He said: “Everybody keeps talking about a slow start I had, but I didn’t score in nine last season so for me this is a quick start.

“This was my second 90 minutes on the bounce and I feel good now so hopefully I can help drive this team forward.”
