AFC Wimbledon has signed Oldham’s Rhys Murphy on loan until the end of the season.

The deal includes the 25-year-old playing in the play-offs if Wimbledon remain in the top seven of league two.

Murphy has already scored nine goals in 15 matches while on loan at Crawley this season, which Don’s coach, Neal Ardley hopes will continue for them.

Speaking during a video interview for Dons Player, Ardley said: “We have always liked Rhys as a player, even before he signed for Dagenham. With Bayo Akinfenwa suspended and Tom Elliott struggling, we were down to two strikers. Rhys has had several clubs after him so we thought it was the right time to strike. He will go straight into our squad for tomorrow’s game.”

Murphy started his career at the Wimbledon academy as an eight-year-old before moving to Arsenal.

He had a successful two-year-spell at Dagenham and Redbridge before moving to Oldham last summer.

Ardley also revealed that Christian Toonga has left the club by mutual consent. The midfielder made four first-team appearances during 2015/16 after joining Wimbledon last summer.
