Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is due to make a decision today about AFC Wimbledon’s proposals to build a stadium on Plough Lane.

Mr Johnson will be reviewing the multi-million pound plans submitted by Merton Council to the Mayor’s Office last week, after reaching agreement with the developers.

Mr Johnson will be able to either refuse the application, call it in for further review or give it his final approval.

A decision is expected at about 4.30pm this afternoon.

The plans to re-develop the Greyhound Stadium in Plough Lane involve knocking down the current greyhound racing track and building a new stadium that can seat 20,000 people, although it would begin as an 11,000 seater stadium before being expanded.

The proposals also include more than 600 flats, shops, a crèche, parking and a squash and fitness club to be built on the site.

The council’s planning committee unanimously backed the plans on Thursday, December 10, but the proposals were referred to the Mayor’s office as part of a standard procedure for “an application of strategic importance”.

Council leader Stephen Alambritis has been a vocal supporter of AFC Wimbledon’s plans, and has gone to City Hall this afternoon to wait for the decision.

However, back in February 2015, Mr Johnson asked for more work to be done on the stadium bid before he was able to support it.

A report released by the Greater London Authority at the time expressed the Mayor’s concerns with affordable housing, flood risks and transport around the site.

And after Merton’s Council’s approval of the plans, planning spokeswoman at Wandsworth Council, Councillor Sarah McDermott, expressed concerns with the application, and called on the Mayor to “intervene and scrutinise this application much more comprehensively.”
