Warburton: Bees must maintain standards or risk being dropped

Brentford boss mark Warburton has warned his men not to let their standards slip else they face a spell on the sidelines.

Goals from Adam Fordshaw, Marcello Trotta and Sam Saunders fired the Bees to a 3-0 League One win at Preston North End on Saturday.

Results elsewhere meant third placed Brentford closed the gap on league pace setters Leyton Orient and Wolverhampton Wanderers to just a point at the top of the table.

It means Warburton's men are unbeaten in their last 10 league games - a run which has featured nine wins and seven cleansheets - and the manager has told his men not to become complacent.

"You have to know that every single day if you fall below the standard you run the risk of losing your shirt," he said.

"Then you might not get it back for a few weeks. You have to have that competition.”

Although Warburton admitted the decision to drop Will Grigg to the bench at the weekend - with Trotta starting alongside Clayton Donaldson up front - was a tactical change of heart that paid off.

"From the first whistle the moved the ball well and worked the channels. We''d worked on that all week and testament to their character," he added.

"We got the two goals and I'm pleased we didn't sit back, but looked for the third goal.

"3-5-2 poses us problems defensively, but gives us options offensively and gives us channels to play into. We looked to work those early on.

"I spoke to both players [Will Grigg and Marcello Trotta] and it's not about one or the other.

"There will be games where they both start. Trotta was away with the Italian under-21s, scored a goal and has looked very good in training."
