Damien Delaney oversaw Crystal Palace’s stunning 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday - but certainly didn’t let the occasion go to his head.

The shock result ruined Jose Mourinho’s 100th home game in charge of the Blues and propelled Palace up to the dizzy heights of second spot in the Premier League.

All three goals came in the second half as new signing Bakary Sako put the Eagles ahead after 65 minutes, only for Radamel Falcao to equalise in the 79th minute.

But just two minutes later Joel Ward popped up in the six-yard box to head home a Sako pull-back and give Palace their first win at the Bridge in 33 years.

That might have sent the Eagles faithful into dreamland, although for veteran defender Delaney it was more a case of putting the result into perspective.

He said: “To get to nine points this early in the season is amazing.

“A couple of years ago we only had seven points in November but we’ve got nine now and we’re not even out of August yet.

“But it’s three points and that’s all it is.

“Unfortunately I have to be the person who puts a bit of a dampener on it - that’s the way I look at it because I’m quite boring!”

Delaney added: “I have a lot of respect for Chelsea because they’re a fantastic team and Mourinho’s a fantastic manager - and I don’t want to sound too happy after victory.

“But if there was ever a time to come to Chelsea this was it.

“They’ve had an iffy start to the season and coming here today we had a lot of confidence.”

The Irishman stressed how important it was to begin the game strongly.

Delaney explained: “We knew if we could start well we could get them on the back foot and hopefully keep them there and I think we did. That was the game plan.

“We worked on it early doors from Monday - the way we wanted to play and the things we wanted to do and hopefully exploit the couple of weaknesses they have.

“Fortunately we were able to do that.”

Palace caused Mourinho’s team repeated problems with the Chelsea manager admitting later that the Eagles deserved their luck.

But the truth was that Alan Pardew’s side were hungry for the victory and organised.

Delaney said: “We’re always a physical side, but we played some great football.

“We played some fantastic football but we’ve been saying since pre-season if we can keep the good things that we have - the physical side, the strength, our high intensity running - and add a little bit more quality, then we will be moving forward.”

He added: “We’ve got a lot of technical players in the team now and I see them every day at training.

“To do it at Chelsea shows how much confidence we have.

“There needed to be some last-ditch defending but Chelsea are a mighty good side.

“I felt we were deserving of our victory.”
