Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish has admitted that he woke up feeling much better the morning after the Eagles had secured their Premier League status.

A 2-1 win over Stoke City on Saturday ensured Palace would be playing in the top flight next season and would be picking up a cheque in excess of £100m from TV deals and prize money.

Parish has a long memory and had been sweating on the club’s survival following a dire run of form since Christmas that saw them plummet from the top six to within six points of the dropzone.

Having seen it all before he was a relieved man come 4.45pm on Saturday when a Dwight Gayle brace ensured the three points needed to be safe.

He said: ”It has been a tense time, we were not secure in the Premier League until Saturday, and I was in a much better place when I woke up on Sunday morning, there is no doubt about that.

“With the win at the weekend, it amazing how different the table looks, we even have an outside chance of finishing in the top 12 – it just means we can look forward to the final more.”

Parish added: “It was difficult to focus on the FA Cup, but now we’re safe.

“We’ve got one more game against Southampton which is important for league position, and also for momentum going into the final.”

Aside from an FA Cup final appearance, Parish also pointed out that Saturday’s win marked a first in the history books at Selhurst Park.

Another year in the Premier League, something for Palace fans to enjoy

“Last weekend we secured our fourth consecutive season in the top flight, and it is the first time we have done that,” he said.

“The longest before that was after the 1990 cup final when we stayed there for three years.

“We got relegated in 1993, when Oldham won their last three games to stay above us on goal difference - which is why we were so worried.

“We have long memories as Palace fans, we were nine points clear with three games to go, and I think Oldham beat Man U away and Villa away, when they were a top team.”

Parish now wants the FA Cup to go with Premier League survival as Palace look to keep pace with the upper echelons of the Premier League.

“As a supporter, if I do stop and think about Palace in the cup final, it’s brilliant, it’s fantastic, and it’s another milestone for the club,” he said.

“But I really want to win it. I don’t’ just want to go there and make up the numbers, I am bored with us being the glorious failure.”

He added: “We have not stolen our way to this cup final – we have beaten four Premier League teams, in among them being Tottenham Hotspur, who were in with a shout of winning the title, and Southampton in the top six possibly, and Stoke are not far behind.

“Hopefully we can grace the final with a game like we did in 1990, which is probably one of the most exciting of all time.”
