Greg Andrews came off the bench last night [Tuesday] to fire Whyteleafe up to third in Ryman Division One South with both goals in a 2-0 win at Hythe Town.

The first half hour was confined mainly to midfield, with hard working Hythe, struggling at the wrong end of the table, chased everything and left little room or time for the visitors to progress further down the field.

Jason Henry, a recent signing from Carshalton Athletic, made the first in-roads down the right wing, before crossing and finding Tommy Harper at the near post.

However, Harper’s touch was just too fine and saw the ball roll across the face of the goal.

Bentley Graham forced the first save of the game when he picked up a loose ball 25 yards from goal and shot, forcing home keeper Dan Eason to make the save.

Sam Clayton, Jason Thompson and Tommy Smith also had chances before Sheikh Ceesay in the Leafe goal was called into action for the first time just beore the break, making a good save from Craig Thompson.

The half ended with Hythe's Laurence Harvey almost scoring an own goal, his attempted clearance clipping the outside of the post and away to safety.

Leafe were on top for most of the second half with Clayton, Thompson and Harper all having chances.

Leafe boss John Fowler then introduced leading scorer Andrews and he quickly responded by scoring a wonder goal in the 64th minute, spotting keeper Eason off his line he hit a superb dipping volley over him and into the back of the net.

The same man then won a corner, which was scrambled away, but only as far as Andrews and from just outside the area, he hit another shot just as sweetly as his first goal to put the result beyond any doubt.

Thompson did put the ball into the Leafe net in stoppage time but any thoughts they had scored a consolation goal were quickly ended by the referee who had spotted he controlled it with his hand and disallowed it.

Leage entertain Redhill this weekend, before a trip to Carshalton Athletic in the League Cup.
